Opposition National Congress of Great Tigray Condemns AU’s Mischaracterization of Tigray’s Territories, Urges Rectification of Misleading Statements

The National Congress of Great #Tigray (Baitona) issues a strong condemnation against the African Union’s (AU) recent mischaracterization of Tigray’s territories and misrepresentation of the situation in the region.

In a statement released earlier today, Baitona opposes statements released by the African Union (AU) and by various embassies based in Addis Ababa, including Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

The statement asserts both statements inaccurately label Tigray’s territories as “contested areas” and misrepresent the situation on the ground, falsely suggesting the presence of ethnic tensions.

On Thursday, AU Chair Moussa Faki Mahamat stated, “I am following with deep concern the escalating tensions between local communities in the contested areas of Northern Ethiopia, including Raya Alamata, Zara, and Ofla.”

Baitona contends that such mischaracterizations “serve nothing other than perpetuating the distorted narratives that have contributed to the nation’s current chaotic state.”

“Baitona firmly asserts that these territories are Tigray’s rightful lands, and any attempt to claim otherwise is a direct violation of the Ethiopian constitution and the rights of the people enshrined therein,” it adds.

Baitona calls upon the AU and the embassies based in Addis Ababa to rectify their misleading statements and acknowledge the rightful ownership of Tigray’s territories.

Baitona urges all concerned entities to provide accurate and reliable information based on objective assessments from the ground.

“The AU’s failure to provide an accurate and objective assessment of the situation in Tigray is disappointing. Its consistent favoritism toward the federal government, contrary to its proclaimed role as a mediator, raises serious concerns about its impartiality and commitment to justice,” Baitona blames the regional organization.

The party also emphasizes the importance of upholding dialogue, justice, and respect for the rights of the people in achieving lasting peace in the region.
