Adem Farah, who has just been appointed as Head of the Democracy Building Center Coordinator Office with the rank of Deputy Prime Minister, made his debut trip to Mekelle, the capital of the #Tigray region, to kick-start delayed political talks between the federal government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).
According to the readout released by TPLF, Adem’s trip to Mekelle, where he is seen being welcomed by TPLF chairman Debretsion Gebremichael, and in a meeting with senior regional officials, constitutes attempts to kick-start the delayed political talks as per the Pretoria Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (CoHA) of November 2022 aimed at addressing the political root causes of the two-year brutal war in the Tigray region.
Adem, who also doubles as Vice President of the ruling Prosperity Party (PP), is accompanied by other senior officials of the Federal Government, including Defense Minister Abraham Belay and Transport and Logistics Minister Alemu Sime.
Members of the Executive Committee of the TPLF, including Getachew Reda, President of the Tigray Interim Regional Administration (TIRA) took part in the meeting from Tigray’s side.
The readout released by TPLF said that during the talks, the two sides acknowledged that political talks between the two parties should have started much earlier. However, both sides now agreed to start regular talks from this onward.
